Inhambane province is characterised by its extensive coconut palms and cashew trees. This province has one of the most famous tourist destinations of the country; the Bazaruto archipelago.
Inhambane is situated on the northern Mozambique coastline and is considered to be the gateway to the renowned Bazaruto Archipelago. You know that you have arrived in the tropics in Inhambane with its thick Coconut Palm and Cashew plantations. The town was founded by the Portuguese in the 15 th century. Vasco da Gama called the region Terra de Boa Gente meaning "the land of the good people" after friendly local tribes.
The colonial legacy is still felt today and one of the biggest tourist attractions is its colonial architecture. Its most famous landmark is certainly the Cathedral of Our Lady of Conception which is around 170 years old. The town flourished due to the slave and ivory trades in the 18th century but when the colonial administration moved to Lorenzo Marques, the town went into decline.
Today, there are many tourist establishments and the region is on its way up. Nearby attractions include the beautiful beaches at Tofo and Barra. Visitors can also easily catch a boat to the nearby Bazaruto National Park which is the largest marine reserve in Africa.
Besides having a dip in the ocean and working on your tan, you can enjoy many exciting excursions to nearby palm fringed islands. Explore the local museum or waterfront which pays homage to the glory days of rail travel.
The local market is well worth a visit for great spices and wonderful fresh seafood. Head out on a trip to Mozambique Island which is a World Heritage Site. It has a long history of Arab and Portuguese occupation. There are many historic buildings on the island.
