Day 1-4: Praia do Sol Resort, Bilene, Mozambique

Depart from Johannesburg early in the morning on the first day of your Mozambique holiday. Customize your self-drive route. Follow the N4 highway towards Maputo, about 540km (335.5 miles) from Johannesburg. After 440km (273.4 miles) from Johannesburg, you will reach the border post, Komatipoort, and enter Mozambique.

You will bypass Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, and follow the national road, the EN1 North in the direction of Macia and Bilene, with GPS co-ordinates; 25:17.543S; 33:13.905E. The Praia do Sol Beach Resort is situated 2km (1.2 miles) outside Bilene, a very popular holiday destination in Mozambique. Bilene is easily accessible from Praia do Sol and offers a range of exciting beach activities.

Experience the thrill of water skiing in Mozambique, explore the waters from a canoe or try and find the various indigenous bird species on a bird watching excursion. Days 4-9: Barra Beach Lodge or Flamingo Bay Water Lodge, Mozambique

Make the most of your exciting Mozambique holiday package and customize your Mozambique self-drive route. Choose either Barra Beach Lodge or Flamingo Bay Water Lodge as the next port of call.

Between secluded beaches and rows of coconut trees in Mozambique is Barra Beach Lodge. It is just a 30 minute drive from Inhambane. Choose to stay in either a Regular or Family Casita, on a Dinner, Bed & Breakfast basis. Sip Sundowners at the popular tropical beach bar, where you can also indulge in a pub lunch or a game of beach volleyball with a view of the warm Indian Ocean in Mozambique.

The other option is staying at the luxury Flamingo Bay Water Lodge. This unique Mozambique lodge is built on stilts in the estuary situated just behind Barra Lodge. The private luxury chalets are connected to the land with wooden walkways and each has magnificent water views over the estuary.

Days 9-11: Polana Hotel or Southern Sun Hotel, Maputo, Mozambique

On the journey back to Maputo which is a 485km drive, be sure to explore the towns of Inhambane, Macia or Bilene if you have not yet done so. Your options are the Polana Hotel, overlooking the Bay of Maputo capturing the former colonial era hospitality and African charm of Mozambique; or the Southern Sun Maputo Hotel, situated right on the beach.

Spend the next two days exploring the charm of Maputo, the vibrant capital of Mozambique. There is something to do for everyone. Explore the local fish market or central and curio markets, museums, nightclubs and learn about the rich history. Day trips to Inhaca Island are great opportunities to get a taste of Mozambique’s island resorts.

Finally, heading home, you will retrace your steps back to the Ressano Garcia border post, then follow the N4 from Maputo to Komatipoort, and from there the N4 from Witbank to Maputo toll road back to Johannesburg in South Africa, or your destination of choice.
