Every year an additional 4 000 million tonnes of carbon accumulates in the atmosphere, and roughly 30 percent of this surplus is estimated to derive directly from the accelerated burning of tropical forests.

World forests supply food to an estimated 200 - 300 million people annually. About 2.6 billion people (62% of the total population) in developing countries, live in rural regions and obtain most of their food from their local environment.
