Barra, Mozambique is approximately 480km (298 miles) from Maputo. Guests need only bring their 4x4 vehicle if they are really going to explore the area. Praia da Barra is a beautiful secluded beach. This area and Tofu are both wonderful scuba diving sites where large marine life can be seen including Manta Rays and Whale Sharks in season.
The town of Inhambane is very historic, being one of the oldest trading ports on the East Coast, it has interesting architecture, a market and guests can book a dhow (traditional sail boat) for a trip across the bay. The Peninsula is great for fresh seafood and delicious roasted cashew nuts - there are a number of restaurants to visit for a sundowner before dinner.
The best time to visit this area is in the dry, cool months between April and September. The winter temperatures are very pleasant and not too hot. This is a malaria area but the problem can be countered if guests wear light weight long sleeves and pants when sitting outside in the evening and use insect repellent, even during the day. It is not necessary to take prophylaxis for visits shorter than 5 days.

Inhambane town is the capital of the province of Inhambane. Barra is 25km (16 miles) from the town and just less than that from the airport.
By Road
The roads leading to Bayview Lodge in Barra, Mozambique are all tarred except for the last few kilometres – this is a well packed dirt road which is accessible to normal passenger cars. It is best not to drive at night; there are just too many animals and vehicles without proper lights on the road. Potholes after the rain are also a problem. The speed limit should be adhered to particularly near towns as spot fines are issued to offenders.
By Air
There are regular flights from Johannesburg (ORTIA) to Inhambane via Maputo and free airport transfers to and from the lodge are provided.
