A Mozambique holiday in Bilene is great for couples and families who like outdoor fun in the sun. The calm conditions of the lagoon are ideal for motorised and non-motorised watersports. Bird watching is popular in summer, also quad-biking and 4x4 adventures in the surroundings.
The 27km (17 miles) long and 5km (3 mile) wide lagoon is an excellent family spot with long white stretches of sand for beach games and shallow water for swimming on the shores. Birders also enjoy the birdlife, with large populations of flamingos and other water birds visiting the area in the summer (November to February is best for birding).
The mouth of the lagoon, usually blocked by a massive sand bank, is best reached by boat or a long and difficult 4x4 track. Yearly the mouth is opened manually by 300 locals, preceded by a ceremony where the Chief of the area blesses the ritual.
